Summary
Effective August 1, 2026, procedure codes S9083 and S9088 become reimbursable ONLY when billed with place of service 20 (urgent care facilities). Claims submitted with any other place of service will be denied. S9083 represents a global urgent care facility service, while S9088 is an add-on code for urgent care operational costs that must accompany an E/M or procedure code.
Action Required
Before August 1, 2026: Billing team must update billing software to enforce place of service 20 (urgent care facilities) requirement for codes S9083 and S9088. Configure system to automatically reject or flag claims with these codes if billed with any other place of service. Update claim scrubbing rules and provider documentation. Notify all providers and urgent care facilities of the new restriction. Failure to enforce this requirement will result in claim denials. Train front-desk and billing staff on proper place of service coding for these procedures.
