S9083 represents a global urgent care facility service, while S9088 is an add-on code for urgent care operational costs used with E/M or procedure codes.

Action Required

Action needed
By July 1, 2026: Billing team must implement place of service validation rules in billing software to ensure S9083 and S9088 are ONLY submitted with place of service 20 (urgent care facilities). Update all claim scrubbing logic to deny or reject claims with these codes paired to any other place of service (e.g., 11, 12, 13, 21). Notify all providers and urgent care staff that S9083 and S9088 require place of service 20 documentation on encounter forms. Train front desk and administrative staff to verify place of service is correctly captured at check-in for urgent care visits. Audit existing charge descriptions and templates to ensure urgent care locations are properly designated. Failure to implement these controls will result in automatic claim denials after August 1, 2026.
