Summary
Effective August 1, 2026, HCPCS codes S9083 and S9088 become reimbursable ONLY when billed with place of service 20 (urgent care facilities). Claims submitted with any other place of service will be denied. S9083 represents a global urgent care facility service, while S9088 is an add-on code for urgent care operational costs used with E/M or procedure codes.
Action Required
Before August 1, 2026: Billing team must update billing system to enforce place of service 20 (urgent care facilities) requirement for codes S9083 and S9088. Configure system to auto-deny or flag claims submitted with these codes using any other place of service. Educate providers and front desk staff that S9083 and S9088 are ONLY reimbursable in urgent care settings. Update encounter forms and billing templates to indicate these codes require POS 20. Review current claims to identify any S9083/S9088 submissions outside urgent care settings for potential resubmission. Failure to implement this change will result in automatic claim denials after the effective date.
