Summary

Aetna considers home uterine activity monitoring (HUAM) experimental, investigational, or unproven. Aetna may consider HUAM medically necessary on an individual case exception basis, after review of each circumstance, for pregnant women with gestational age greater than 18 weeks who cannot feel their contractions and have one of the listed complications, such as incompetent cervix, placenta previa with hemorrhage, a history of classical cesarean section or deep myomectomy, physiologic or anatomic factors such as paralysis or neuromuscular disorders, triplet or greater multiple gestations, preterm labor where conventional arrest methods have failed, or a positive fetal fibronectin test with cervical changes between 20 and under 36 weeks despite multiple tocolytics. HUAM is not considered medically necessary in twin gestations unless other extenuating circumstances exist.

What to do

Action · 3 steps
01Billing team: Do not bill home uterine monitor (HCPCS S9001) or home visit for prenatal monitoring (CPT 99500) for home uterine activity monitoring, because the policy lists both as not covered for the indications in the policy.
02Where a case is submitted under the individual case exception, the documentation must show gestational age greater than 18 weeks, that the woman cannot feel her contractions, and one of the listed complications.
03For a twin gestation, the documentation must show the extenuating circumstances, since HUAM is not considered medically necessary in twin gestations otherwise.
