Summary
Aetna has reaffirmed (as of May 26, 2026) that dendritic cell immunotherapy remains experimental, investigational, or unproven and is NOT covered for any malignant neoplasm indication. This policy applies to all dendritic cell-based therapies, including DC-CIK combinations. Billing teams must deny all claims for dendritic cell immunotherapy and educate providers that this treatment is not a covered benefit.
Action Required
By June 26, 2026: Billing team must implement the following: (1) Update billing system to flag and deny all claims for dendritic cell immunotherapy with non-covered reason code (experimental/investigational status); (2) Add denial rules for any claim referencing DC-based therapies, DC-CIK combinations, or autologous dendritic cell vaccines; (3) Create pre-authorization rejection template informing providers that dendritic cell immunotherapy is not a covered benefit under Aetna plans; (4) Communicate to oncology, hematology, and neurology providers that prior authorization requests for dendritic cell therapies will be automatically denied; (5) Update patient communication materials to reflect non-coverage. Failure to implement these measures will result in claims being incorrectly paid for non-covered services, leading to recovery actions and compliance violations.
