Summary
Aetna has classified acoustic heart sound recording, computer analysis, and related technologies (including CPT 0716T, 0962T, and HCPCS S3902) as experimental, investigational, or unproven. These services are NOT COVERED for any cardiac-related diagnoses. Billing teams must deny claims for these codes and educate providers that alternative diagnostic methods should be used.
Action Required
Effective immediately (2025-10-16): Billing team must implement the following: (1) Update billing system to DENY all claims for CPT 0716T, 0962T, and HCPCS S3902 when submitted to Aetna plans with any ICD-10 code in the range I00-I99.9, R00.8-R00.9, R01.0-R01.2, R09.89-R09.A9, R93.1, R93.811-R93.89, R94.30-R94.39, or Z13.6; (2) Add automated rejection rules to flag these codes as non-covered before claim submission; (3) Create provider bulletin notifying cardiology, internal medicine, and general practice physicians that acoustic heart sound analysis is not a covered service under Aetna plans, effective immediately; (4) Train billing and front-desk staff to inform patients at point-of-service that these services will not be covered and require out-of-pocket payment or alternative diagnostic methods; (5) Update encounter forms and templates to remove references to acoustic heart sound testing. Failure to implement these changes will result in claim denials and potential compliance issues with Aetna.
