Summary
Cigna Healthcare is discontinuing all medical Individual & Family Plans (IFPs) effective January 1, 2027. Affected patients will lose coverage on December 31, 2026, and must select new insurance for 2027. Cigna commercial group plans and dental IFPs are unaffected. Claims submitted within required timelines for services incurred during active coverage will still be processed.
Action Required
Before December 31, 2026: Billing team must identify all patients with Cigna Connect IFP coverage (verify via patient ID cards) and flag charts for follow-up. Front desk staff should be prepared to: (1) advise patients that their Cigna IFP coverage ends 12/31/2026, (2) ask patients about new coverage selection, and (3) obtain updated insurance information before January 1, 2027. Billing team must ensure all claims for Cigna IFP patients with service dates through 12/31/2026 are submitted by applicable state and federal timely filing deadlines to guarantee processing. Update patient intake forms and insurance verification workflows to identify Cigna IFP plans. Billing team should document coverage end dates in billing system to prevent claim denials for services on or after 1/1/2027. Notify providers to discuss coverage transition with patients during December 2026 visits.
