Summary
Alaska Medicaid has temporarily expanded telehealth coverage during the COVID-19 public health emergency, allowing additional provider types to deliver services via telehealth and adding new CPT codes for telephone and online digital services. Critical billing requirement: Starting March 1, 2022, modifier FQ is mandatory for all audio-only telehealth services or claims will be denied.
Action Required
By March 1, 2022: Billing team must update system to require modifier FQ when billing CPT codes 99441-99443 and 98966-98968 for audio-only telehealth services. Update encounter forms and billing software rules to automatically append modifier FQ. Failure to include modifier FQ for dates of service on or after 3/1/2022 will result in denial of payment for audio-only services. Note that vision services (CPT 92002, 92004, 92012, 92014) are no longer covered via telehealth as of November 1, 2021.
