Summary
Beginning March 1, 2009, Illinois Medicaid will require National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers instead of one-digit payee codes to designate Pay-To Providers on electronic claims (837 and DDE formats). Claims without registered Payee NPIs will be denied, though paper claims are exempt from this requirement.
Action Required
By March 1, 2009: Billing team must register all payee NPI information with Illinois HFS at www.myhfs.illinois.gov and update billing software to submit Payee NPIs in Loop 2010AB, NM109 for all electronic claims (837 and DDE). Share NPI information between payees and providers for billing purposes. For internet access issues, fax NPPES approval letters to 217-557-8800. Claims submitted electronically without registered Payee NPIs will be denied.
