Michigan Medicaid is reversing temporary COVID-19 policies for durable medical equipment (DMEPOS) in two stages, restoring prior authorization requirements and documentation standards. Stage 1 (Dec 1, 2022) restores prior auth for walking boots, wheelchair batteries, catheters, and incontinence products, while Stage 2 (Jan 1, 2023) restores prior auth for diabetic supplies, wound supplies, and respiratory supplies.

Action Required

Action needed
By December 1, 2022: Billing team must update system to require prior authorization for walking boots, wheelchair batteries, blood pressure monitors, enteral/parenteral formulas, incontinence products, catheters, and ostomy products listed in Stage 1. Stop billing hand sanitizer (A9286). Restore pre-pandemic documentation requirements including certificates of medical necessity. By January 1, 2023: Add prior authorization requirements for diabetic supplies, wound supplies, and respiratory/tracheostomy supplies in Stage 2. Submit invoices to Program Review Division instead of Document Management Portal for manually priced items. Coordinate with practitioners to obtain required documentation for beneficiary files as orders expire.
