Genetic Testing for Cystic Fibrosis 2.02.17
The July 16, 2026 update made expanded CFTR testing (CPT 81223) medically necessary when standard variant testing is insufficient to establish a diagnosis or assess reproductive risk, and when results will impact clinical or reproductive decision-making. Common-variant CF genetic testing is medically appropriate when results will impact clinical care, the test is performed by a CLIA-certified laboratory, and a listed circumstance applies, such as diagnostic testing for people with symptoms of CF and a negative sweat test, carrier testing for people with a family history of CF, or prenatal testing when both parents have a diagnosis of CF.
