Voice Prosthesis for Voice Rehabilitation Following Total Laryngectomy (CPB 0560, reviewed 2026-08-26)
Aetna considers an indwelling tracheo-esophageal (TE) voice prosthesis medically necessary for voice rehabilitation after total laryngectomy when a laryngologist or speech-language pathologist recommends it and the selection criteria are met. Non-indwelling voice prostheses such as the Provox NiD are considered medically necessary under the same recommendation requirement, and hand-held artificial larynx devices are also considered medically necessary. Pneumatic bionic voice prostheses and the TE voice prosthesis insufflator are considered experimental, investigational, or unproven because their clinical value has not been established.
