Summary
Effective October 1, 2026, Alabama Medicaid is eliminating the state licensing requirement for DME and POP providers previously issued by the Alabama State Board of Prosthetists and Orthotists (which ceases operations September 30, 2026). All DME and POP providers must now be enrolled with Medicare and maintain Medicare accreditation and certification as the condition for Medicaid enrollment and revalidation. Providers will be assigned specialties based on their Medicare PECOS enrollment.

By October 1, 2026: Billing team and DME/POP providers must verify all Alabama Medicaid-enrolled providers have active Medicare enrollment with current accreditation and certification. Update provider credentialing files to reflect Medicare PECOS specialty assignments. Remove dependency on Alabama State Board of Prosthetists and Orthotists licenses from enrollment verification processes. Providers currently holding only Alabama State Board licenses (hired between July 1, 2026 and October 1, 2026) must contact Alabama Medicaid DME Program at (334) 242-5050 to complete Medicare enrollment before the October 1, 2026 deadline. Failure to maintain Medicare accreditation and certification will result in Medicaid enrollment termination. Update billing system credentialing and revalidation workflows to require Medicare accreditation verification instead of state board licensing by September 30, 2026.
