Summary

Alabama Medicaid is eliminating the state Board of Prosthetists and Orthotists licensing requirement effective October 1, 2026. DME and POP providers must now enroll with Medicare and maintain Medicare accreditation/certification as the new condition for Medicaid enrollment and revalidation, replacing the previous state license requirement.

Action Required

Before Oct 1, 2026
By September 30, 2026: Billing team must verify that all Alabama Medicaid DME and POP providers have active Medicare enrollment and current Medicare accreditation/certification. Audit provider records in billing system to confirm Medicare PECOS enrollment specialty assignments. Between now and October 1, 2026: Providers currently licensed by the Alabama Board of Prosthetists and Orthotists who wish to enroll with Alabama Medicaid must contact the Medicaid DME Program at (334) 242-5050 immediately, as the Board stops accepting new licenses on July 1, 2026 and ceases operations September 30, 2026. Update credentialing files to document Medicare enrollment status and accreditation for all affected providers. Upon October 2026 quarterly update: Update billing system workflows and provider enrollment verification procedures to require Medicare enrollment and certification instead of Alabama state Board licensing. Failure to maintain Medicare accreditation will result in Medicaid enrollment termination and claim denials.
