BlueCHiP for Medicare national and local coverage determinations policy

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island·RI·Provider Update

Summary

BlueCHiP for Medicare will now strictly follow CMS National Coverage Determinations (NCDs) and Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs) rather than applying independent policy determinations. Many existing BCBSRI policies are now commercial-only, and providers must reference BlueCHiP for Medicare's NCD and LCD policies separately. This is a foundational policy shift effective August 1, 2026.

Action Required

Before Aug 1, 2026
By August 1, 2026: Billing team must implement the following changes: (1) Create a new verification workflow to distinguish BlueCHiP Medicare claims from commercial claims at intake; (2) Update billing software to apply CMS NCD/LCD guidelines (not BCBSRI independent policies) for all Medicare Advantage BlueCHiP claims; (3) Train all billing staff and providers that BCBSRI commercial policies no longer apply to BlueCHiP Medicare; (4) Establish a process to monitor CMS NCD and LCD updates at https://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database and implement changes within 30 days; (5) Create internal documentation linking to BlueCHiP Medicare's NCD/LCD policy page for reference during claim submission. Failure to apply correct CMS policies will result in claim denials and potential compliance violations.
