Summary
Effective January 1, 2027, the American Medical Association is replacing traditional global obstetrical bundles with separate CPT codes for distinct maternity services (prenatal care, labor management, labor/delivery, and postpartum care). IHCP will recognize these new codes, representing a shift from bundled to unbundled billing. Additional policy guidance from IHCP is forthcoming.
Action Required
By December 31, 2026: Billing team must monitor IHCP website (in.gov/medicaid/providers) and email notifications for detailed guidance on new maternity CPT codes and updated reimbursement policies. Update billing software, encounter forms, and provider education materials to reflect the transition from global bundles to separated maternity service codes. Coordinate with OB-GYN providers to ensure documentation and billing align with new code structure. Claims submitted with old global codes after January 1, 2027 may be denied or require correction.
