Summary
Effective July 1, 2026, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois will implement enhanced claim editing for evaluation and management (E&M) services for commercial members. If billed E&M services don't support the documented level of care, reimbursement will be automatically reduced to the validated lower level based on AMA guidelines.
Action Required
Before July 1, 2026: Providers must ensure E&M documentation fully supports the level of service billed according to AMA guidelines for medical decision-making. Billing team should review RP024 Evaluation and Management coding policy and update provider education materials. Claims with insufficient documentation will be automatically downcoded and paid at lower rates.
