Summary
Starting July 1, 2016, fully-licensed marriage and family therapists in Michigan can now enroll as Medicaid providers and bill directly under their own NPI instead of billing under a supervising physician's NPI. Marriage counseling remains non-covered, but behavioral health services are covered with specific CPT codes and a 20-visit annual limit.
Action Required
By July 1, 2016: Billing team must update provider enrollment system to allow fully-licensed marriage and family therapists to bill under their own NPI instead of supervising physician's NPI. Enroll qualified therapists through MDHHS CHAMPS Provider Enrollment system. Update billing software to recognize new provider type and enforce 20-visit annual limit for behavioral health services. Ensure limited license therapists and interns continue billing under supervising therapist's NPI.
