Summary

Michigan Medicaid now covers trauma screening and behavioral health services for children under 21 as part of EPSDT benefits. Primary care providers can bill specific E&M and assessment codes for trauma screening during well-child visits and refer to mental health services when screening is positive.

Action Required

Action needed
By February 1, 2017: Providers treating pediatric patients should implement trauma screening tools (ACE-Q, Resilience Questionnaire, Pediatric Intake Form) during well-child visits. Billing team must ensure trauma screening can be billed using listed E&M codes (99201-99215, 99381-99395) and assessment code 96127. Establish referral protocols to mental health providers for positive screenings. Update encounter forms to include trauma screening documentation requirements.
