Summary

Neuromuscular stimulation is considered investigational as a technique to restore function following nerve damage or nerve injury. This includes providing upper-extremity function in individuals with nerve damage such as spinal cord injury or post-stroke, improving ambulation in individuals with foot drop caused by congenital disorders such as cerebral palsy or by nerve damage such as post-stroke or multiple sclerosis, and providing ambulation in individuals with spinal cord injury. Functional electrical stimulation devices for exercise in individuals with spinal cord injury are also considered investigational. Under the Federal Employee Program, FDA-approved devices may not be considered investigational and may be assessed only on the basis of medical necessity.
