Genetic Testing for Inherited Disorders 2.02.03
Excellus BlueCross BlueShield medical policy 2.02.03 is to be used only when Health Plan medical policies do not exist for the specified disease or condition. It considers genetic testing for inheritable conditions medically appropriate when there is a reasonable expectation of a genetically inherited condition, the testing method is proven, the results will influence treatment or prevention decisions, and testing is offered with adequately trained professionals and a qualified laboratory. Testing for a known familial pathogenic variant is medically necessary, while testing for chronic fatigue, ADHD and direct-to-consumer home testing kits is investigational. The current effective date is December 18, 2025, and the December 18, 2025 annual review states that policy intent is unchanged.
