Effective November 1, 2026.
Check the payer's preauthorization website to confirm which member contracts are subject to prior authorization for ABA treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Before scheduling ABA services for affected members, obtain prior authorization from the payer; claims submitted without required prior auth will be denied.
Coordinate with providers to ensure that all ABA treatment requests include complete clinical documentation supporting medical necessity, including: diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder from a qualified treating professional; documentation that ASD symptoms impair communication, social, or behavioral functioning such that the member is a safety risk or unable to participate in age-appropriate activities; recommendation from a qualified treating professional (psychiatrist, pediatrician, pediatric neurologist, developmental pediatrician, or psychologist experienced in autism); individualized treatment plan (ITP) prepared by a certified ABA provider and documented in the medical record; specific targeted behaviors (ASD-related and impairing functioning); current functioning level and severity using objective measurements and at least one standardized assessment; detailed evidence-based treatment descriptions for each targeted behavior; documentation of guardian/caregiver training and participation; clinical justification for frequency, duration, and modality of services (face-to-face supervision, intensive group therapy, natural setting observation); measurable discharge/transition goals; and for continuation of services, documentation of functional and measurable progress toward ITP goals using data collected during sessions, clinically significant improvements maintained outside treatment, use of same measurement tools as baseline, objective measurements at minimum every six months, and standardized assessments annually.
Update charge entry and claim templates to ensure all required documentation is attached or referenced before claims are submitted; claims lacking required documentation will be denied.
Inform providers and clinical supervisors that the policy limits members to treatment by one authorized ABA provider at any given time and that clinical documentation must support that the targeted behaviors cannot be managed in a less intensive level of care.
Ensure the practice does not bill for ABA services used for educational, vocational, or custodial purposes, as these are not covered under this policy.
Monitor the payer's next review scheduled for April 2027 for any policy updates.
