Summary
Aetna's CPB 0841 (effective 2025-12-09) classifies non-invasive measurement of Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) in skin, saliva, and tears as experimental, investigational, or unproven and denies coverage for these tests. Billing teams must deny all claims for AGE measurement procedures and educate providers that this service is not reimbursable under Aetna plans.
Action Required
By December 9, 2025: Billing team must (1) implement claim denial rules in billing system for any non-invasive AGE measurement tests (including skin auto-fluorescence/SAF, AGE Reader measurements, and saliva/tear AGE tests); (2) update claim scrubber to flag and deny claims with ICD-10 codes E08.00-E13.9 when billed with unlisted/experimental AGE measurement procedures; (3) create denial letter template citing CPB 0841 as non-covered experimental service; (4) notify all providers (especially endocrinology, nephrology, and cardiology) that AGE measurement testing is not reimbursable effective this date. Front desk staff should inform patients during scheduling that this test is not covered. Failure to implement denials will result in overpayment liability and potential audit findings.
