Aetna considers behavioral vision therapy, also called visual perceptual training, experimental, investigational, or unproven for visual perceptual dysfunctions and for all other indications, including body dysmorphic disorder and reading or spelling disorders, because its effectiveness has not been validated in well-designed prospective clinical studies. Aetna considers vision restoration therapy experimental, investigational, or unproven for visual field deficits due to ischemic optic neuropathy, neurotrauma, or stroke and for all other indications. Aetna also considers vision restoration therapy, alone or with transcranial direct current stimulation, experimental, investigational, or unproven for visual field deficits following stroke or neurotrauma.
