Anesthetic and Antiemetic Infusion Pumps (CPB 0607, reviewed 2026-02-25)
Summary
Aetna considers the following anesthetic and antiemetic infusion pumps experimental, investigational, or unproven because their effectiveness has not been demonstrated in well-designed clinical studies: the ambIT disposable electronic infusion pump for post-surgical pain, infusion pumps for intra-articular or intralesional administration of narcotic analgesics and anesthetics, infusion pumps for local administration of narcotic analgesics and anesthetics in arthroscopic shoulder surgery, bariatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, donor nephrectomy, free flap breast reconstruction, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, open inguinal hernia repair or total hip arthroplasty, continuous subcutaneous antiemetic pumps, and the esketamine intravenous analgesic pump for post-cesarean pain and depression. The listed HCPCS codes are not covered for the indications in the policy. Disposable intralesional anesthetic and analgesic infusion pumps inserted at surgery are surgical supplies integral to surgery and are not separately reimbursed. The policy does not apply to continuous peripheral nerve blocks.
