Summary
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona's policy on implantable shock absorbers for knee osteoarthritis is effective October 1, 2026. Their use is considered experimental or investigational when any one of five conditions is met, including lack of final approval from a governmental regulatory body such as the FDA, insufficient evidence to support improvement of the net health outcome, and insufficient evidence to support improvement outside the investigational setting. The MISHA Knee System received FDA De Novo marketing authorization on April 10, 2023 for medial knee osteoarthritis in people who have failed nonsurgical or surgical treatment and are ineligible for or unwilling to undergo joint replacement.
