Carboplatin shortage: Kyxata accepted for existing prior authorizations

Summary
Cigna Healthcare will accept Kyxata as an alternative medication for patients with existing approved prior authorizations for Carboplatin due to a temporary manufacturing shortage. This eliminates the need for new prior authorization requests when substituting Kyxata for already-approved Carboplatin prescriptions covered under medical benefits. New Kyxata starts and other alternative medications still require standard prior authorization.
Action Required
Effective immediately (July 13, 2026): Billing and clinical staff must update internal workflows to recognize that patients with approved Carboplatin prior authorizations may fill prescriptions for Kyxata as a substitute without requiring a new prior authorization submission. Provider teams should communicate this exception to relevant oncology and treatment staff. Ensure that claims for Kyxata submitted against existing Carboplatin prior authorizations are processed without delay or denial. Note: This policy applies ONLY to medical benefit prescriptions—pharmacy benefit prescriptions continue to follow standard prior authorization processes. Monitor Cigna Healthcare communications for updates on when Carboplatin supply normalizes and this temporary policy expires.
