Summary
BCBSRI now requires all contracted providers to refer members exclusively to in-network providers for all services including durable medical equipment, radiology, behavioral health, and laboratory/pathology services. The policy specifically identifies four laboratories (Accu Reference Lab, Quest Diagnostics, Total Toxicology, U.S. Lab and Radiology, Inc.) that are NOT in the BCBSRI network and must be avoided. Providers must verify in-network status using the BCBSRI Find a Doctor tool before establishing referral relationships.
Action Required
By July 1, 2026: (1) Billing and clinical staff must immediately update all referral protocols to mandate in-network provider verification before sending any referrals for BCBSRI members. (2) Create and distribute a list of excluded laboratories (Accu Reference Lab, Quest Diagnostics, Total Toxicology, U.S. Lab and Radiology, Inc.) to all clinical staff, with instructions to NEVER refer BCBSRI members to these facilities. (3) Update EMR/billing system referral templates to require automatic verification of provider network status using BCBSRI's Find a Doctor tool. (4) Train all providers, clinical staff, and medical assistants on the new requirement before the effective date. (5) Implement a compliance check in the billing workflow to flag any claims from out-of-network providers that were referred by your practice—these claims will be denied and may result in balance billing to members and reputation damage. Failure to comply will result in increased claim denials, patient complaints, and potential contract violations with BCBSRI.
