Summary
Starting January 1, 2026, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois is implementing a Medical Benefit Therapeutic Alternatives program that will restrict coverage for certain provider-administered medications to only approved therapeutic equivalents or alternatives. Prior authorization will be required for non-preferred drugs, with requests processed by BCBSIL or Carelon Medical Benefits Management.
Action Required
Before January 1, 2026: Billing team must access the Medical Benefit Therapeutic Alternatives Summary to identify affected medications and update workflows to check eligibility and benefits through Availity Essentials before rendering services. Staff must verify prior authorization requirements for provider-administered drugs and establish process to submit prior authorization requests through Carelon Medical Benefits Management when non-preferred therapeutic alternatives are medically necessary. Failure to obtain required prior authorization will result in claim denials for affected medications.
