Summary
Michigan Medicaid updated disposable hearing aid battery coverage effective January 1, 2020, removing the 6-month dispensing restriction and expanding eligible provider types. Beneficiaries can now receive up to 36 batteries per hearing aid per visit with a 72 battery annual maximum, and batteries can be dispensed by hearing aid dealers, audiologists, hearing centers, or medical suppliers.
Action Required
By January 1, 2020: Billing staff should update systems to reflect removal of 6-month dispensing restrictions for hearing aid batteries and verify that hearing aid dealers, audiologists, hearing centers, and medical suppliers are recognized as eligible dispensing providers. Prior authorization is still required for quantities exceeding 72 batteries per hearing aid per year.
