By January 1, 2023: Billing teams at practices serving Medicaid patients in Michigan must add new doula billing codes S9445 (prenatal/postpartum visits, $75 each) and T1033 (labor/delivery attendance, $700) with HD modifier to billing systems. Update encounter forms to capture required documentation including start/end times, services rendered, and healthcare provider recommendation source. Ensure claims use appropriate primary diagnosis codes Z33.1 (pregnancy) or Z39.2 (postpartum) and encourage reporting social determinants codes Z55-Z65 when relevant. Maximum 6 prenatal/postpartum visits and 1 labor/delivery visit per pregnancy without prior authorization.
