Summary
Effective April 1, 2026, new GLP-1 agonist prescriptions will require pharmacy review and prior authorization for type 2 diabetes patients not currently on oral antidiabetic agents. Several GLP-1 medications (Byetta, Bydureon, Victoza) are now considered not medically necessary due to other formulary options being available.
Action Required
By April 1, 2026: Billing team must update prior authorization workflows for GLP-1 agonist prescriptions (Mounjaro, Ozempic, Rybelsus, Trulicity). Providers must document type 2 diabetes diagnosis with lab results (A1C ≥6.5%) and confirm patients are not combining with DPP-4 inhibitors or other GLP-1 agents. Update EMR templates to capture required documentation. Claims may be denied without proper prior authorization and documentation.
