Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has classified several dry eye syndrome treatments as investigational and non-covered, including eyelid thermal pulsation therapy (LipiFlow, iLux System, TearCare, Tixel i) and tear film imaging devices (LipiView, LipiScan). These procedures will not be reimbursed by this payer.
Action Required
By December 18, 2025: Billing team must update system to flag dry eye thermal pulsation treatments (LipiFlow, iLux, TearCare, Tixel i) and tear film imaging (LipiView, LipiScan) as non-covered for Excellus BlueCross BlueShield patients. Update encounter forms to alert ophthalmology providers that these services are considered investigational. Obtain advance beneficiary notices (ABNs) if patients want to proceed with treatment at their own expense.
