Aetna considers robotic-assisted rehabilitation of the upper limb and lower limb experimental, investigational, or unproven for indications including humeral fracture, incomplete spinal cord injury, neuromuscular diseases such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease, stroke, and traumatic brain injury, because of insufficient evidence of its effectiveness. The Intrepid Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis (IDEO), the Myomo e100 robotic arm brace, the Myomo MyoPro2+ myoelectric limb orthosis for medical purposes, IpsiHand, Motus Hand and Foot devices, Obi robotic-assisted feeding device, powered hip orthoses for persons with spinal cord injury, Trexo Home robotic-assisted gait trainer, and Walkbot robotic-assisted gait trainer are also considered experimental, investigational, or unproven because their effectiveness has not been established. The Kinova JACO assistive robot is not covered as a personal convenience item and is not covered by Medicare.
