Nebulizers (CPB 0065, reviewed 2026-03-18)
Aetna covers small volume nebulizers and related compressors for listed indications, including antibiotics for cystic fibrosis or bronchiectasis, beta-adrenergics and other inhaled drugs for COPD, dornase alfa for cystic fibrosis or primary ciliary dyskinesia, and epinephrine for croup. Large volume nebulizers are considered medically necessary for pentamidine, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, tracheobronchial stents, and tracheostomy, and ultrasonic nebulizers are considered medically necessary only for tobramycin (Tobi) delivery in members with cystic fibrosis who meet the criteria for a standard nebulizer and the additional criteria in the policy. Aetna considers these nebulizers and related equipment experimental, investigational, or unproven for all other indications, including nebulized corticosteroids for nasal polyps and viral wheezing, nebulized lidocaine, and nebulized magnesium for pediatric asthma.
