Endovascular Repair of Aortic Diseases (CPB 0651, reviewed 2026-09-25)
Aetna considers endovascular repair of infra-renal abdominal or aorto-iliac aneurysms medically necessary when an FDA-approved fenestrated, branched or non-fenestrated endovascular stent graft is used, and endovascular repair of descending thoracic aneurysms medically necessary when an FDA-approved endoprosthesis is used. The policy also covers endovascular stenting for aortic coarctation in patients with systemic arterial hypertension and a resting arm-leg pressure gradient greater than 20 mmHg, and endovascular treatment of pulmonary artery stenosis or hypoplasia in a child. Bifurcated-bifurcated aneurysm repair, the Nellix endovascular aneurysm sealing system, endovascular repair of non-dissected ascending aortic disease, fabric wrapping, implanted wireless pressure sensors for endoleak detection, the Nectero EAST system, pre-operative inferior mesenteric artery embolization to reduce type II endoleak, and total endovascular aortic arch repair are listed as experimental, investigational or unproven.
