Mechanical Stretching Devices for Contracture and Joint Stiffness (CPB 0405, reviewed 2026-06-30)
Aetna covers dynamic splinting devices for the knee, elbow, wrist, finger or toe when there are documented signs and symptoms of significant motion stiffness or loss and the splint is used as an adjunct to occupational or physical therapy at least 3 weeks after injury or surgery, or when the member has a documented history of motion loss in a joint and is in the acute post-operative period after a second or subsequent surgery. The policy also covers the dynamic adjustable ankle extension/flexion device (e.g., JAS Ankle) for contractures, the EZ Turnbuckle orthosis after open reduction internal fixation for radial head fracture, and continued mechanical stretching when documented improvement in range of motion is shown. Dynamic splinting for carpal tunnel syndrome, cerebral palsy, foot drop associated with neuromuscular diseases, multiple sclerosis, stroke and plantar fasciitis, JAS splints, PASS devices such as the ERMI flexionators and extensionators, SaeboMas, Medi-Dyne Prostretch, and mechanical stretching for skin graft contracture are considered experimental, investigational or unproven.
