Antibody Tests for Neurologic Diseases (CPB 0340, reviewed 2026-07-08)
Aetna considers antibody testing for neurological diseases medically necessary when applicable criteria are met, including for myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, paraneoplastic and immune checkpoint inhibitor-associated neurologic syndromes, MOG antibody-associated disease, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, and autoimmune encephalitis. Antibody testing for screening of asymptomatic individuals, and antibody testing in members without clinical features of encephalitis, are considered not medically necessary. Anti-HH3 and Ns6S testing for ALS, repeat MOG testing for monitoring MOG-positive optic neuritis, and routine neuronal antibody testing for early childhood-onset epilepsy are considered experimental, investigational, or unproven.
