Summary
Effective December 1, 2026, CPT code 1020T (Raman spectroscopy of skin lesions with malignant risk scoring) now requires prior authorization/precertification through Carelon Medical Benefits Management for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield commercial plans in Georgia. This is a new code addition to the precertification requirement list.
Action Required
By November 15, 2026: Billing team and providers must update internal systems and workflows to require prior authorization for CPT code 1020T. 1) Update billing software to flag claims with CPT 1020T for Anthem BCBS Georgia commercial plans and route to prior auth team before submission. 2) Educate ordering providers and clinical staff that CPT 1020T requires precertification before scheduling or performing the procedure. 3) Establish process for submitting prior authorization requests through Carelon's provider portal (https://providerportal.com) or Availity Essentials (https://Availity.com). 4) Add CPT 1020T to encounter forms and superbills used by dermatology or pathology staff. Claims submitted without prior authorization will be denied by the payer.
