Summary
Effective April 1, 2019, BCBSRI requires provider taxonomy codes on all claim submissions. This applies to both paper and electronic claims with specific placement requirements for CMS-1500 and UB-04 forms.
Action Required
By April 1, 2019: Billing team must update all claim submission processes to include provider taxonomy codes. For paper CMS-1500 claims: place taxonomy code in box 33b with ZZ qualifier for billing level, in shaded portion of box 24J, and ZZ qualifier in box 24I. For UB-04 claims: place billing taxonomy in box 57. For electronic claims: configure 837I and 837P loops with appropriate PRV segments and taxonomy codes. Update billing software to automatically include taxonomy codes on all claims to prevent rejections.
