Summary
Effective April 1, 2019, BCBS Rhode Island requires provider taxonomy codes to be submitted on all claims in specific EDI segments. Claims must include taxonomy codes for billing providers, attending providers, and rendering providers in the appropriate 837 electronic claim loops.
Action Required
By April 1, 2019: Billing team must update electronic claim submission system to include provider taxonomy codes in all required EDI segments (PRV segments in 837I and 837P loops 2000A, 2310A, 2310B, and 2420A). Verify billing software automatically populates taxonomy codes for all billing, attending, and rendering providers. Contact clearinghouse or software vendor if system cannot accommodate taxonomy code requirements. Claims without required taxonomy codes will not be processed by BCBS Rhode Island.
