Summary
BCBS Rhode Island has suspended prior authorization requirements for urgent/emergent inpatient care, long-term acute care, acute inpatient rehabilitation, and skilled nursing services during COVID-19, effective April 17, 2020. While prior auth is waived, notification requirements within 48 hours of admission and discharge still apply to ensure proper reimbursement.
Action Required
Immediately: Stop submitting prior authorization requests for urgent/emergent inpatient admissions, long-term acute care, acute inpatient rehabilitation, and skilled nursing services for BCBS RI members (except FEP plans). Continue to notify BCBS RI within 48 hours of admission via provider portal and within 48 hours of discharge by fax (401) 272-8885 for inpatient/rehab or (401) 459-1623 for SNF. Elective hospital procedures still require prior auth.
