Summary
Effective February 1, 2021, computed tomography for bone mineral density studies is no longer considered medically necessary and will not be covered. This change applies to commercial insurance products only, not Medicare or Medicaid plans.
Action Required
Immediately: Stop ordering CT scans for bone mineral density studies for commercial insurance patients. Use DXA scans or other approved methods instead. Update provider order sets and clinical protocols to remove CT as an option for bone density testing. Claims for CT bone mineral density studies will be denied for commercial plans.
