Summary
BCBSRI is removing Lantus from their formulary and replacing it with interchangeable biosimilar insulin products (Semglee-yfgn and insulin glargine-yfgn) as preferred brands effective April 1, 2022. Patients with existing Lantus prescriptions will automatically receive the biosimilar without needing new prescriptions in most states.
Action Required
By April 1, 2022: Billing team must update insulin product tracking to reflect that BCBSRI no longer covers Lantus and now covers Semglee-yfgn and insulin glargine-yfgn as preferred brands. Update pharmacy coordination procedures to ensure patients receive covered biosimilar products. Inform providers that existing Lantus prescriptions will automatically be filled with biosimilar equivalents.
