Summary
Effective April 1, 2026, Medicaid and HARP members age 18+ in New York can now access home sleep studies as a medically appropriate alternative to lab-based sleep studies. Providers determine medical necessity and appropriateness on a case-by-case basis. Billing teams must be prepared to process claims for this newly covered diagnostic service.
Action Required
By March 31, 2026: Billing team must update system configuration to recognize home sleep studies as a covered benefit for New York Medicaid and HARP members age 18+. Verify that billing software can process home sleep study claims separately from lab-based studies. Update provider encounter forms and clinical documentation templates to ensure providers document medical necessity and clinical rationale for home versus lab study selection. Communicate with providers that home sleep studies are optional and provider-determined, not automatically required. Train front desk and authorization staff to route home sleep study requests appropriately. Failure to process claims correctly may result in denials or payment delays.
