Summary
BlueCHiP for Medicare policies will now strictly follow CMS national and local coverage determinations (NCDs/LCDs) rather than BCBSRI's commercial policies. Many existing BCBSRI policies now apply only to commercial products, requiring providers to reference separate Medicare NCD/LCD policies for BlueCHiP Medicare coverage decisions.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must stop using BCBSRI commercial policy guidelines for BlueCHiP Medicare claims. Access and reference CMS NCD and LCD policies for all BlueCHiP Medicare coverage determinations. Update billing workflows to check Medicare-specific coverage policies separately from commercial BCBSRI policies. Train staff to distinguish between commercial and Medicare coverage rules to prevent claim denials.
