Summary
BCBSRI has extended their hospital readmission policy timeframe from 14 days to 30 days effective November 1, 2024. Readmissions to the same hospital or hospital system for the same, similar, or related diagnosis within 30 days will not be reimbursed when using DRG or case rate methodology.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must update systems to flag potential readmissions within 30 days (increased from 14 days) for BCBSRI patients at DRG/case rate facilities. Update denial tracking to monitor 30-day readmission denials. Notify case management and discharge planning teams to review readmission risks for extended 30-day period.
