Update to Supervisory Protocol Policy: Approval Improvements
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island·RI · Psychiatry·Behavioral Health
Effective date

We identified it
Jun 19, 2026
Summary
BCBSRI no longer requires credentialed providers to submit documentation for approval to implement supervisory protocols for behavioral health services. Credentialed providers now only need a written policy addressing supervisory protocol requirements, but must still use appropriate modifiers when billing for services rendered by non-credentialed supervisees.
Action Required
By November 1, 2024: Behavioral health providers credentialed with BCBSRI should create or update written supervisory protocol policies to meet requirements. Billing team must ensure claims continue to include appropriate modifiers when services are rendered by non-credentialed supervisees under supervision. Credentialed clinicians must remain the rendering provider on all claims.
