Summary
BCBSRI's BlueCHiP for Medicare will now follow CMS national and local coverage determinations (NCDs/LCDs) instead of commercial policies. Many existing BCBSRI policies now apply to commercial products only, and Medicare coverage decisions will be based on CMS guidelines or peer-reviewed evidence when CMS guidance is unavailable.
Action Required
By March 1, 2025: Billing team must review all BlueCHiP for Medicare claims to ensure they follow CMS NCDs and LCDs rather than commercial BCBSRI policies. Update billing procedures to reference Medicare-specific coverage determinations. Verify coverage eligibility using Medicare guidelines for all BlueCHiP for Medicare members before submitting claims.
