Summary
This policy reminds providers that behavioral counseling for obesity (BMI 30+) by primary care providers and nutrition counseling by licensed dietitians are covered preventive services without patient cost-sharing for Medicare Advantage and Commercial plans when provided in-network.
Action Required
By August 1, 2025: Billing team should verify that obesity counseling services use time-based HCPCS Level II G codes for E/M counseling services. Ensure nutrition counseling is only billed when provided by licensed, in-network dietitians for adults with chronic disease or cardiovascular risk factors. Update encounter forms to remind providers these are covered as preventive services with no patient cost-sharing.
